You Only Live Once: How College Binge Drinkers Miss Out

Elements' David Sack, MD in Psychology Today

Once again, the public is trying to make sense of the wild, drug-fueled antics of a misguided youth. On August 31, 22-year-old Samantha Goudie tried to storm the field at a University of Iowa football game and shocked police when a breathalyzer test registered a blood alcohol content (BAC) of.341, over four times the legal limit. Nonapologetic and even boastful, she tweeted from the police station, "Just went to jail #yolo" (translation: you only live once) and "I'm going to get .341 tattooed on me because its so epic." Yes, you only live once, but why waste it on drinking binges you won't even remember?

America's Sugar Addiction: How Our Need for A Sweet Fix Has Expanded Our Waistlines

Addiction Treatment Magazine | August 22, 2013

In the United States, most adults consume 22 teaspoons (355 calories) of sugar a day, yet the recommended intake is only six teaspoons (100 calories) for adult women and nine teaspoons (150 calories) for men. Rewind time and you find that in the early 1800s, Americans were consuming just 3.8 teaspoons of sugar per day. That increase has led to weight gain and such serious health risks as diabetes. The infographic below was created to demonstrate the alarming increases in sugar consumption over the years and help raise awareness about sugar addiction.

Heavy Drinking and Smoking Speed Mental Decline

Promises | September 11, 2013

Cigarette smoking and heavy alcohol consumption are notable causes of a range of short- and long-term health problems. Among the potential problems associated with each of these activities is a significant decline in brain function over time. According to the results of two new studies, people who combine smoking with heavy alcohol consumption have higher risks for long-term brain function impairment. In addition, people who participate in both of these activities experience a much faster decline in their mental abilities than people who don't smoke and drink only moderate amounts of alcohol.

Misunderstanding Sexual Addiction

Sex Addiction Expert, Robert Weiss LCSW, CSAT-S in PsychCentral

In a nationally distributed, recently published study a group of researchers argued that what is often called "sexual addiction" or "sexual compulsivity" could be better understood as a pathological variation of "high sexual desire." Since the study's release, critics have repeatedly expressed concern regarding numerous, profound flaws both in the method of data collection and the study sample itself. Does the field of sexual addiction require more research before the disease is "officially" sanctioned by the likes of the DSM? Yes, absolutely. This need for research, however, does not mean that sexual addiction does not exist or that we shouldn't be treating it as best we can.

Survey Shows Widespread Adolescent Rx Abuse

Right Step | August 28, 2013

Parents of teens today may have more to worry about than finding a marijuana joint in their son or daughter's back pocket. The U.S. prescription drug epidemic is filtering down to young adults, with recent figures showing as many as 10 percent of adolescents using prescription drugs recreationally. Understanding Addiction: Why Do Some People Become Addicts?

The Recovery Place | September 4, 2013
