With each encounter in our lives, we categorize. It's a survival skill that allows our brains to make sense of an endless flow of data. Without it, we would have to puzzle out the meaning of each person and object individually rather than, say, assigning that speeding car to the "reckless driver" category and getting out of its way. But this ability, and the ease and unconsciousness with which we do it, can lead us to distorted perceptions, sometimes with results harmful to others and ourselves. This may be especially problematic for those struggling with addictions and mental health problems, who may need help but are reluctant to place themselves in the category of "addicted" or "mentally ill" because of often negative social perceptions (their own included) about what this means.

Mixing Drugs Can Prove Fatal

Taken alone, narcotics are deadly enough, but when an addict starts mixing drugs, it gets even riskier. Deaths from mixed drug overdoses date back decades - famously "The Wizard of Oz" star Judy Garland and American icon Elvis Presley. They should serve as cautionary tales, but the addict does not think rationally. A recent string of high-profile accidental overdoses involving addicts mixing drugs serves as a reminder about the dangers of multiplying these poisons.

If you’ve got kids or grandchildren, you know that they love technology. They’ve got televisions, gaming consoles, and laptops in their bedrooms, pads and tablets in their book-bags, iPods and smartphones in their pockets. And wherever they are, whenever they are, no matter how old they are, they are probably using one or more of these devices. Is it possible that we’re raising a generation of technological junkies who will suffer withdrawal symptoms if and when they are separated from their digital devices?

Promises Treatment Centers Welcomes Joni Ogle, LCSW, CSAT, as Director of Young Adult Programs

In this role, Ms. Ogle oversees Promises’ intensive outpatient and residential treatment programs for young adults in Los Angeles. Ms. Ogle has more than 25 years of clinical experience working with children, adolescents and adults in addiction, trauma and co-occurring mental health disorders in both a treatment center environment as well as in private practice. She is a licensed clinical social worker and a certified sex addiction therapist with a master’s in social work from the University of Houston. She has additional training in Recreational Therapy, Post Induction Therapy and Dr. Brené Brown’s The Daring Way™ Shame Resilience Curriculum.

Right Step Launches Groundbreaking 'Positive Recovery University'

Right Step | March 4, 2014

Right Step in Houston, the first addiction treatment center in the world to use Positive Recovery, announces the launch of an intensive training program called "The Positive Recovery University." In combination with other evidence-based strategies and treatments, the Positive Recovery coursework will serve as a guidepost for the staff as they work to help addicts discover meaning and purpose in their lives upon achieving sobriety. The Positive Recovery University will be led by Right Step and Promises Austin Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jason Z.W. Powers, who holds a Masters of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and was recognized as a top addiction doctor in Houston four times by H Texas Magazine.

Mindfulness in Recovery at The Ranch

Prayer and meditation have long been the underpinning of many fine addiction and mental health treatment programs. Due to the research that shows the efficacy of mindfulness in relieving a wide range of suffering, The Ranch has taken this a step further. We have developed a program dedicated to training all clients in basic mindfulness skills.
