Understanding What Loneliness Is

Are You Lonely Or Just Alone?

Loneliness is having a negative perception of your social interactions. We’ve all heard the age-old adage of “I am alone, but I’m not lonely”. That speaks of self-perception and how important it is in determining how you feel about your situation. When it comes to the coronavirus outbreak, positively coping with loneliness during quarantine is a must. We have no choice. We must adhere to the quarantine guidelines in order to ensure our health and the health of our neighbors. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to suffer. We have several useful suggestions you can use to manage your loneliness and overcome it.

Make your perception of the quarantine positive. When are you ever going to get this much time with yourself again? You are a wonderful person to get to know and to love. The quarantine represents an opportunity to make positive life choices.

Seven Types Of Loneliness

Psychology Today lists seven types of loneliness on a post about the topic. You may have New-Situation loneliness. If your surroundings are unfamiliar, such as starting at a new school, moving to a new locale, or beginning a new job, you might feel lonely. I’m-different loneliness is the type of loneliness that makes you feel isolated because you don’t have things in common with the people surrounding you. No-sweetheart loneliness happens when you feel lonely due to the lack of a significant romantic partner. No-animal loneliness is due to not having a connection to a pet.

No-time for me loneliness describes the feeling people get when they are surrounded by people who don’t make time for them. Untrustworthy-friends loneliness describes when you are in a situation where you cannot find a suitable friend that you can trust and share confidences with. The last type of loneliness that Psychology Today describes is called Quiet-presence loneliness.
