5 Examples Of Different Recovery Programs

Just like no two people end up with a substance use disorder in the exact same way, there isn’t a single type of recovery program that is best for everyone. A treatment center that offers a range of different types of recovery programs is better able to tailor a treatment plan that better meets the needs of its clients.

4 Examples Of Different Recovery Programs

Different recovery programs can be categorized based on the level of support and supervision they offer to their clients. Below are six examples of recovery programs that might be an option if you or a loved one is struggling with an addiction.

1. Residential Treatment

Residential treatment is the most structured and supportive of the different types of recovery programs. Marked by the fact that each individual lives at the facility for the duration of their inpatient treatment, residential treatment is often necessary to overcome the temptation of relapse.

The duration of a residential treatment program can span anywhere from 30 days to 60 days, 90 days, or even longer. In general, the longer that treatment lasts, the more successful the recovery is.

Residential treatment can be broken down further into either long term or short term.

Long-term residential treatment

A highly-structured and supportive environment that allows clients to access clinical and therapeutic staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, long-term residential treatment can last for six months, 12 months, or even longer.

Short-term residential treatment

Short-term residential treatment also tends to be intensive, though it is usually shorter in duration when compared to long-term options. Thirty, sixty, and ninety day-long programs are typical. Many short-term residential treatment programs are based on the 12-step model though not all are spiritual in nature.

2. Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment is usually one of two forms: an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or an outpatient program. Both types of programs require you to drive to meetings on a regular basis. However, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) typically meets on a daily basis for several hours at a time. The program’s length can vary but is often several weeks, or even months, long.

A regular outpatient program doesn’t usually last for as many days or for as many hours during each session. One of the appeals of outpatient treatment is the flexibility that the program offers. This allows a person to continue to meet their responsibilities to their family, work, school, and other prior commitments.

3. Addiction Counseling

Regardless of which of the different recovery programs are chosen, addiction counseling is the centerpiece of treatment. Most treatment centers provide both individual and group counseling because the benefits of each complement the other.

Individual counseling

Individual counseling is undertaken with an addiction specialist. These specialists have specific training in diagnosing and addressing substance use disorders. For instance, some common issues that you may examine include,

  • Coping skills
  • Anger management
  • Communication issues
  • Co-occurring mental health issues.

Group counseling

Group counseling is also led by a trained professional. It provides clients with the opportunity to practices those skills learned in individual counseling. In addition, group counseling allows individuals to converse with others like themselves about the issues and challenges that only those who have struggled with substance use disorder can appreciate.
